When a Brand Writes Its Own Music: Building Commercial Bank of Dubai's Sonic Identity

What if a brand didn't need to be given a sound?
What if that sound already existed within its identity, waiting to be discovered?
That was the question we asked when creating the sonic identity for
Commercial Bank of Dubai (CBD).
Most sonic branding projects begin with creative references, mood boards, or musical styles. While those are valuable tools, we wanted to explore a different approach, one rooted in the brand itself.
Rather than composing a mnemonic based on perception, we looked for tangible elements that could shape the music naturally. Three sources emerged: sound, geography, and colour.
Listening to a Landmark
CBD's logo draws inspiration from Dubai's iconic Deira Clock Tower, a landmark that represents the beginning of the bank's journey.

Instead of using it purely as visual inspiration, we visited the tower and recorded its natural acoustic character. Every strike, resonance, and metallic tone became raw material for the composition.
The building didn't simply inspire the music. It became part of the instrument.
Turning Geography into Music
One of the most unique aspects of the project was using geography as a compositional tool.

We took the Deira Clock Tower's exact GPS coordinates and translated them into musical information using a mathematical framework. The latitude was mapped across twelve musical semitones, while the longitude was mapped across seven musical modes.
Together, these calculations produced G-sharp Mixolydian—a scale that naturally emphasises the note F-sharp.
In practical terms, this meant that the exact place where CBD's story began determined the musical framework of its sonic identity. Rather than choosing a key because it felt right, the location itself guided the decision.
Finding Harmony in Colour
The final layer came from the brand's visual identity.

Using Scriabin's chromesthesia model, a recognised framework that associates colours with musical pitches, we translated CBD's brand palette into notes.
Then something unexpected happened. The brand's teal aligned with F-sharp—the very same tonal centre already established by the geographic calculations.
Three completely independent inputs.
Sound.
Geography.
Colour.
All converging on the same musical destination.
More Than a Mnemonic
The final result is a four-second ascending F-sharp arpeggio built from the recorded tones of the Deira Clock Tower and guided by its exact geographic coordinates.

Rather than relying solely on creative interpretation, every major musical decision can be traced back to a real element of the brand's identity.
The result is more than a mnemonic.
It's a sonic identity with genuine provenance—one rooted in place, history, and design.
The Future of Sonic Branding
At Audio Militia, we believe sonic branding is most powerful when it reflects something authentic about the brand behind it.
Sometimes that starts with emotion.
Sometimes it starts with storytelling.
And sometimes, as it did for Commercial Bank of Dubai, it starts with a landmark, a set of coordinates, and a willingness to let the brand write its own music.
