Reimagining a Voice That Still Shapes the Present

What would Chris Hani say to us today if his voice could cut through time and speak into this moment?
It’s a question that sits at the intersection of history and responsibility. More than three decades after his passing, the values he stood for, non-racialism, economic freedom, and dignity for all remain deeply relevant. Not as distant ideals, but as active, unfinished work.
This project began with that tension in mind. Not as an attempt to look back, but as an opportunity to engage with the present in a meaningful way.

The Intention
From the outset, the intention was clear: this was not about recreating Chris Hani’s voice. It was about reimagining how his message could be experienced today.
There is a fine line between preservation and interpretation, especially when working with the legacy of someone so deeply embedded in a nation’s history.
For us, the responsibility was not just technical, it was emotional, cultural, and ethical. The question became: how do you create something that feels immediate and human, without losing the weight of where it comes from?
The Process
We approached the project with care and precision, building from the ground up.
The first step was scripting, grounding the speech in the principles Chris Hani lived and fought for. Every line was shaped to reflect his stance on equality, justice, and the ongoing pursuit of a fair and inclusive society.
From there, we moved into voice creation. Using AI as a tool, we assembled a voice that could carry tone, presence, and intention. This wasn’t about imitation. It was about constructing something that felt authentic to the message, rather than identical to the man. Once the voice was established, the focus shifted to sound.
Through detailed sound design and final mix, we shaped the listening experience to feel intimate and grounded. Subtle choices in pacing, tone, and space were made to ensure that nothing distracted from the message being delivered. The goal was clarity, allowing the words to land with the weight they deserve.
At every stage, the question remained the same: does this serve the message?
The Role of Sound
Sound has a unique ability to carry emotion and meaning in ways that visuals alone cannot. It creates proximity. It builds presence. It invites the listener to engage, rather than observe. In his project, sound was not just a layer, it was the medium through which the message lived.
By carefully shaping the voice and its environment, we were able to create something that feels less like a reconstruction, and more like a moment.
A moment that exists between past and present.
A Responsibility to the Present
This work was presented as part of the 33rd commemoration held in Mthombomuhle, at the Kwaggafontein Community Hall, a space rooted in community, reflection, and shared memory. Beyond the event itself, the significance lies in what it represents, because remembrance alone is not enough.
To engage with history meaningfully is to recognise its continuity, to understand that the values people fought for do not belong to the past, but to the present and the future.
Not a Recreation. A Continuation.
The final piece stands as a continuation of a message that still carries urgency.
Not a recreation of a voice, but a reimagining of how that voice can exist today. Not a moment of nostalgia, but a call to awareness.
For Audio Militia, this project reflects an ongoing journey, one that sits at the intersection of sound, storytelling, and evolving technology. As tools like AI become more integrated into creative work, the responsibility grows alongside them. It is no longer just about what can be created, but how and why it is created.
To use these tools with intention. To approach them with respect. and to ensure that the outcome holds meaning beyond the medium.
